Kennel Gegwen

Siberian huskies have been my number one hobby and passion since 1989. Dogs got into my life suddenly. I had recently moved in the countryside and started thinking that it might be fun to have a dog to play with. My choice turned out to be a Siberian husky. When I was fetching the first puppy we agreed with the breeder about getting another puppy within a few months. And it happened that I shared the fate of many other new husky owners and there was soon also a third and a fourth puppy...

Siberian husky is an arctic sleddog and the only reasonable way of giving a pack of huskies all the excersize they need is to harness them in front of a sled or a wheeled vehicle e.g. an ATV in a less snowy season. The training season begins in September when the weather starts cooling and continues until spring. In summer the huskies are on vacation and enjoy the sun and warm weather like we men do. And life with huskies is not mere mushing. Our daily activities include obedience and agility training and what’s best − a lot of frolicking.

As time has passed the hobby has become more like a lifestyle. The winters used to be the void dull period between far too short summers. Now they are highlights of the year. Holidays in the world metropols are but a memory and weekends are spent in training camps and competition trips which are an esstial part of your life when you've got huskies. Racing is not all about winning but also testing your dogs − not only their speed but their temperament and attitude, too. Moreover, races and common training sessions give you a possibility to spend quality time with like-minded friends and discuss all kinds of dog issues.

However, personally I am more interested in hiking with my dog team out in the distant snow fields: alone as well as together with friends or clients.

Currently (autumn 2010) there are 14 siberians in my kennel, 13 adults and one pup.

Why Gegwen?

Gegwen (pronounced [ge:wen]) is an old Chukchi word for larch. As there are larches growing on our lot and as I think that Siberian larches, Siberian huskies and the Chukchi mix well, I chose Gegwen as our kennel name.

Where is Gegwen?

We live in southern Finland 150 km north of Helsinki close to the city of Tampere. Our small village of Saarikunta in Vesilahti offers relatively good grounds for breeding and training huskies. Should you visit Saarikunta, you might see us mushing on the fields, lakes and village roads of Saarikunta.
